Voting Breakdown of 2024 Presidential Election in Virginia

A representative of a local political advocacy group recently reached out to me about putting together a map for their organization, and I was more than happy to jump into the data. Colors in the following map show the political party that won each precinct, and labels describe the margin of victory by percent and number of votes. To view in a separate window, click here.

Recent work in Python

A friend recently mentioned feeling shaking one afternoon, so I decided to stretch my Python abilities and see if I could map the past weeks earthquakes globally. Here are the results, along with their source code. Data pulled from USGS Earthquake Data and plotted in Python using plotly and pandas.

Demographic Analysis in the Charlottesville Area

This project saw me comparing data on the proportion of households with children (top) and median income (bottom) in the Charlottesville area. Each map on the left is accompanied by a hotspot analysis map on the the right, which shows areas where the selected variable was clustered lower and higher.

Litter Survey in Hopewell, VA

Recently completed as a favor to the Hopewell department of Public Works, this map depicts the relative intensity of litter throughout the city of Hopewell, based on windshield surveys completed in 2023. Areas highlighted in red show the highest prevalence of street trash, while areas in yellow were relatively litter free.

Some areas with the highest rates of litter in Hopewell include sectors just south of downtown (W City Point Rd area), the Arlington area to the central southeast of town, and the Oaklawn Blvd corridor in the southwest.

The West City Point Rd area and Arlington areas represent areas of lower relative income for the city, and higher rates of litter may be attributed to a lack, or perceived lack, of social investment in those areas. Strategies to reduce litter on these areas may include outreach initiatives that allow residents to feel more connected with their city, like youth programs, community gardens, etc. In short, residents will be more likely to invest effort where they feel they themselves are being invested in.

The Oaklawn Blvd corridor, connecting the rest of the city to I-295, sees much higher rates of transient visitors, usually stopping off for food, fuel, or lodging, thus this area is an unlikely to be served as well by outreach initiatives. Strategies to reduce litter here may include increased signage or stiffer enforcement of litter laws.

Crime Analysis in Hopewell, VA

Crime data for Hopewell was separated by type and generally geolocated using 100-block segments. The points generated were then used to create heat maps showing relative intensity of reported crimes throughout the city.

Capital Region Military Alliance - VA Map

The Capital Region Military Alliance of Virginia, or CaRMA, is a program designed to foster connections between military institutions and surrounding civilian communities. This map highlighted the city and county communities affiliated with CaRMA, local military installations, National Park Service lands, airports, hgihways, and chambers of commerce. The color scheme followed color codes from CaRMA's style guide, with slight adjustments in saturation for legibility.

Proposed GRTC Bus Stops

For this project, I was tasked with interpreting data on population density, income, and relative access to personal vehicles as factors in deciding where to place two hypothetical proposed bus stops. While away from the main road, the proposed stops are in an area with relatively few car owners and lower than average income, and the expansion of the service area would bring coverage to several hundred likely riders.

Future Land Use Map of Hopewell, VA

The following map of planned development zones in Hopewell represents a consolidation of disparate data sources, sources which were aggregated in one place as part of this little project.

Storymaps: At the Top of the World

Here I was tasked with using ArcGIS Storymaps to create a narrative explained geographically. I chose to depict the year I lived in Austria honing my German and teaching in Austrian schools.
